Your House Is Quiet During the Day
If the panels are producing while nobody is home, a battery may shift surplus generation into the evening. There still needs to be enough spare solar energy to charge it.
A battery lets you keep some of the electricity produced by your solar panels for the hours when the panels are generating less. We plan solar battery storage in Sunderland for new PV installations and for existing systems where the inverter and electrical setup allow a safe retrofit.
The useful question isn’t simply whether a bigger battery will store more energy. It’s how much surplus electricity your panels have, how much you use after sunset and what that electricity would have earned if you exported it.

For a new Sunderland rooftop system we can consider the battery and inverter together. With existing solar, we first need the inverter specification, the electrical arrangement and information about any existing export or generation payments. An AC-coupled battery may offer a different retrofit route from replacing equipment with a hybrid inverter.
Storage can make sense for a household in Washington whose daytime production exceeds immediate demand, or a Sunderland family using more power in the evening. It is less convincing when almost every generated unit is already consumed during the day or export payments are unusually attractive.

If the panels are producing while nobody is home, a battery may shift surplus generation into the evening. There still needs to be enough spare solar energy to charge it.
Cooking, lighting and appliances can increase demand after sunset. Battery discharge power matters as well as capacity: a battery may not be able to run every high-power appliance at once.
A retrofit may improve how much generated electricity stays in the home. We check wiring, the existing inverter, metering and the physical location before discussing compatible options.
Future demand can affect battery sizing, although EV charging often involves much larger energy quantities than a small home battery can provide. The equipment should be planned as a system, not selected independently.
Battery capacity is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh). A 5 kWh battery holds roughly five units of energy before allowing for usable-capacity limits and conversion losses. A 10 kWh system may make sense where electricity use and surplus generation are higher, but it is not automatically twice as useful.
Start with how much solar electricity you usually export, how much grid electricity you import in the evening and any seasonal changes. Sunderland’s reference 4.5 kWp system generates around 3,942 kWh annually, but much of that arrives in the brighter months. A battery cannot manufacture extra winter solar electricity.
We also examine charge/discharge power, backup requirements, warranty throughput, degradation and whether the battery can safely be installed where you want it.
Energy Saving Trust uses £5,000–£8,000 as a broad typical storage-system cost guide. Its separate 5 kWh example is around £4,600. These are national benchmarks, not fixed Sunderland Solar Panels prices. An actual quote depends on battery capacity, inverter requirements, wiring, protection equipment, access and whether solar is being installed at the same time.

| Cost factor | Why it changes the quotation |
|---|---|
| Usable battery capacity | Larger storage generally costs more and needs to justify the extra stored units |
| New build or retrofit | Retrofitting may require additional controls, cabling or inverter work |
| Inverter arrangement | Hybrid and AC-coupled configurations have different equipment requirements |
| Battery position | Suitable ventilation, access, clearance and cable routing affect the job |
| Backup capability | An appropriate changeover and backup design may require additional equipment |
For financial comparisons, the important number is the extra value of stored electricity, not total electricity generation. With an illustrative import rate of 26.32p/kWh and export rate of 12p/kWh, moving one otherwise-exported kWh into home use has a gross value of approximately 14.32p before storage losses. Losses reduce this further. The battery must justify its purchase cost against that incremental benefit and any relevant time-of-use tariff savings.
Garage walls, utility areas and suitable external locations may all be possible, depending on the manufacturer's specification and the building. We consider fire-safety guidance, clearances, temperature exposure, access for inspection and the route between the battery, inverter and consumer unit. A damp cupboard or an inconvenient position close to an escape route should not be chosen merely because it looks tidy.
Not by default. Most grid-connected solar systems shut down when the mains supply fails. Backup requires equipment specifically designed and configured for safe islanded operation, with clearly defined backup circuits or loads. If continuity for a fridge, router or essential circuits matters to you, that requirement needs specifying before quoting.

Only if it has enough usable charge for your overnight electricity use. A 5 kWh unit cannot reliably cover an overnight load exceeding its usable capacity, and the battery may not fully recharge on a dull winter day.
Not necessarily. Retrofitting battery storage often involves checking or changing the inverter and controls rather than replacing working PV modules.
No. The extra electricity you use must be worth more than the export revenue forgone, and the gain must justify the installation cost and any future replacement expense.
Some systems support scheduled grid charging. Whether it is permitted or worthwhile depends on the battery configuration, tariff rules and actual difference between import prices.
Only when the system includes properly designed backup functionality. Confirm what circuits and maximum loads will be supported rather than assuming whole-house backup.

Tell us whether you already have panels, approximately how much electricity you use and what you want the battery to achieve. We’ll review practical sizing and compatibility before quoting.
